When is Kiel Week 2024?
Kiel Week will take place this year from Saturday, June 22 to Sunday, June 30, 2024.
What is Kiel Week?
The Kieler Woche is the largest sailing event in the world. It has been held annually in Kiel in the last full week of June since 1882. Originally a pure sailing regatta, Kiel Week has developed over the years into a major international event that attracts millions of visitors. In addition to the spectacular sailing competitions, you will now find an extensive program with concerts, cultural performances and diverse culinary experiences, making Kiel Week a highlight even among non-sailors.
Kiel Week 2024 program
Kiel Week 2024 once again promises a diverse and exciting program that will delight sailing enthusiasts as well as culture and music lovers. From 22 to 30 June, Kiel will become a vibrant center of sailing and entertainment.
Sailing program of the Kiel Week 2024
The heart of Kiel Week is undoubtedly the sailing program. With over 2,000 sailors from more than 50 nations, competitions are held in numerous classes. From traditional dinghy and keelboat regattas to spectacular offshore races, Kieler Woche offers sailing sport at the highest level. Highlights include the Kiel Cup Regatta, the international class regattas and the prestigious windjammer parade on June 29th, where majestic tall ships and historic vessels conquer the Kiel Fjord. View the full sailing program here or scroll down to the bottom of the page.
Kieler Woche line up for concerts and culinary offers
In addition to sailing, Kiel Week offers a varied cultural program. Over 300 concerts on various stages in the city provide musical highlights. International stars, up-and-coming artists and local bands offer a wide range of musical genres, from rock and pop to jazz and classical music. Special venues include the "tremendously quiet" stage (the open-air stage Krusenkoppel), which is known for its unique acoustic concerts, and the Kieler-Woche-Hoftheater, which presents a varied theater and performance program. Check out the full entertainment program here.
Kiel Week will also be a culinary feast for the senses. Numerous stalls and markets invite you to feast and linger. From traditional North German specialties such as fish sandwiches and Labskaus to international delicacies, there is something for every taste. The International Market on Rathausplatz is particularly popular and offers a culinary journey around the world through the cuisines of different countries.
RADIO BOB! at the Kieler Woche 2024
A special highlight of Kieler Woche 2024 is the Radio BOB! Stage. This stage has established itself as a central meeting point for rock and alternative fans and offers an impressive line-up. The stage features top-class acts from the rock and metal scene and promises unforgettable concert experiences. Visitors can look forward to energetic performances by national and international bands who will thrill the audience with their rousing shows. Will there be fireworks at Kiel Week 2024?
Yes, you can marvel at several impressive fireworks displays at Kieler Woche 2024. A special highlight is the big final fireworks display "Sternenzauber über Kiel" on the last Sunday, June 30, 2024. This spectacular event traditionally begins with torch floats in Kiel Harbour from around 22:00, followed by the fireworks show at 23:00. The fireworks combine laser technology, drones and classic pyrotechnics, which can be clearly seen from the entire harbor area. If you want to see the fireworks from the water, you can buy tickets for the fireworks cruise and experience the fireworks up close.
In addition, a sailing fireworks display is planned for Wednesday, June 26, 2024, in the Olympic Port of Schilksee. This will also take place at 23:00 and will be clearly visible from the Olympic Center and Schilksee beach.
Night Glow Kiel Week
Another highlight is the Night Glow event of the 18th International Willer Balloon Sail. On three evenings, including June 22, 26 and 29, 2024, illuminated hot air balloons will shine and offer a breathtaking show, which will be crowned with a subsequent fireworks display from 22:30 on the Nordmark sports field. On these evenings, the show is crowned with a subsequent firework display. This visual production makes for unforgettable moments under the night sky.
The Bavarian tent at Kieler Woche 2024
A special highlight of Kiel Week is the Bayernzelt, which brings a piece of Bavarian festival culture to the far north. The Bayernzelt is known for its exuberant atmosphere, authentic Bavarian music and delicious specialties. Here you can look forward to a hearty atmosphere in which the best of Bavaria is presented.
This year, the Bayernzelt will open on Friday, June 21, 2024, at 5:00 pm.
Traditional Bavarian dishes such as Wisswurst, Brezn, Obazda and of course juicy pork knuckle will be served in the Bayernzelt. And the beer will be flowing in abundance, of course in traditional beer mugs, just like at the Oktoberfest. Musical entertainment is provided by live bands, who encourage guests to sing along and dance with folk music and modern pop hits.
The Bayernzelt is not only a culinary experience, but also a place for socializing. Visitors can sit together in a cozy atmosphere, enjoy the typical Bavarian hospitality and experience the hustle and bustle of Kiel Week to the full. Whether locals or visitors from further afield, the Bayernzelt offers a welcome change and a journey into Bavarian culture in the middle of Kiel.
Euro 2024 at the Kieler Woche
As Kiel Week this year coincides with the European Football Championship, there will also be a number of public viewing events in Kiel during the festival.

Kieler Woche parking & arrival
How to get there
- By car: Getting here by car is relatively easy, but we recommend arriving in good time to avoid traffic jams. The main access roads to Kiel are the A7 and A215 as well as the B76 and B503. Please note that some roads may be closed during Kieler Woche to regulate visitor traffic.
- By train: Kiel is easy to reach by train. The main train station is centrally located and only a few minutes' walk from the main event venues. Deutsche Bahn and regional transport offer special services and additional trains for Kieler Woche to meet the increased demand.
- Bus: There are numerous long-distance bus connections to Kiel, and the ZOB (Zentraler Omnibusbahnhof) is located right next to the main train station. Local buses operated by Kieler Verkehrsgesellschaft (KVG) provide good connections within the city.
- By ship: For visitors from Scandinavia and the Baltic States, there are ferry connections that lead directly to the port of Kiel. Stena Line and Color Line offer regular connections.
Parking
There are many parking facilities in Kiel, but during Kieler Woche they are often quickly full. We therefore recommend using park-and-ride facilities to ensure stress-free parking. Here is some important information:
Park-and-Ride
- Ostuferhafen: Free parking with shuttle bus connections to the city center.
- Exerzierplatz: Centrally located with paid parking facilities.
Parking garages
- Parking garage Altstadt: Located directly in the city center.
- Sophienhof parking garage: Near the main train station.
- Förde Parkhaus: Also centrally located and easily accessible.
Underground parking garages
- Karstadt underground car park: Offers direct access to the city center.
- Citti-Park: Slightly outside, but well connected by public transport.
During Kieler Woche, there are also temporary parking spaces that are set up especially for the event. You can find the latest information and prices on the official Kieler Woche website.
We also recommend using public transport, as many event locations in the city center are within easy walking distance and you often have to travel longer by car. The KVG offers more frequent trips and special offers during this time.
Tips for your visit to Kiel Week
Best times for a visit
To enjoy the full program of Kieler Woche and avoid the crowds, it is best to plan your visit on weekdays. The early mornings and late afternoons are particularly suitable for exploring the various attractions in peace and quiet. However, for special highlights such as the closing fireworks or big concerts, it's worth putting up with the crowds.
Clothing and weather preparations
Kiel Week takes place in June, but let's be honest... the weather can still be very changeable, especially in the north of Germany. It's best to dress according to the onion principle, so you can add or remove layers depending on the weather. A rain jacket and comfortable shoes are definitely a must, as most events take place outside. Don't forget to bring sunscreen and a hat for sunny days.
Safety measures and useful apps
For a safe and relaxed visit to Kieler Woche, you should observe the official safety measures. Follow the instructions of the organizers and use the designated routes and entrances. Download the "Kieler Woche App" so that you always have the latest information, program overviews and emergency contacts to hand.
Insider tips
Insider tips from the locals
The locals know best where to discover the hidden treasures of Kieler Woche. Visit smaller stages and local markets, which are often away from the main attractions. A special highlight is a visit to the "Kieler Woche Hoftheater" - an insider tip for culture and theater lovers. Unfortunately, we're not from Kiel, so it's best to ask a Kieler about their personal favorite places when you're there - that way you'll get the best insider tips.
The best viewpoints and photo spots
For breathtaking views and perfect photos, don't miss the harbour and the keel line - this is also where a large part of the sailing program takes place. Here you can capture the large sailing ships and the picturesque coastal landscape. Or explore the Reventlou Bridge, from where you have a great view of the hustle and bustle of Kiel Week. The light is particularly beautiful early in the morning or late in the afternoon and the places are less crowded.
Quiet places to relax
Even during the lively Kieler Woche, there are quiet retreats where you can relax. The Schrevenpark is a green oasis in the middle of the city, ideal for a picnic or a walk. The grounds of Kiel University's Botanical Gardens are also great, as you can switch off surrounded by exotic plants. If you love the sea, the beaches of Schilksee and Falckenstein are perfect for escaping the hustle and bustle and enjoying the fresh sea air. From Schilksee, you can watch the sailing ships almost all day long.
