When do the Cologne Christmas markets open in 2026?

Most of Cologne's Christmas markets open on Monday 16 November 2026 and close on 23 December 2026. The first to open is the Harbour Christmas Market at the Chocolate Museum, which starts on 13 November 2026. Two markets stay open past Christmas: the Harbour market runs to 3 January 2027 and the Heumarkt half of Heinzels Wintermärchen until 10 January 2027 — so those are the two to aim for if you are travelling between Christmas and New Year.

One date to plan around: the large city-centre markets close for Totensonntag on Sunday 22 November 2026, a national day of remembrance in Germany. If that weekend is the one you had in mind, the smaller district markets and the Harbour market are your alternatives.

Getting to Cologne from the UK

Cologne is an unusually easy German city to reach from Britain, which is part of why it works so well as a Christmas market weekend rather than a full week away.

By train

There is no direct train from London. Eurostar runs from London St Pancras to Brussels-Midi/Zuid in 1 hour 53 minutes, where you change onto a high-speed service that reaches Cologne in a further 1 hour 52 minutes. Eurostar quotes the full London to Cologne journey at just over five hours, connection time included.

The reason the train is worth the extra hours: Cologne Hauptbahnhof sits directly beside the cathedral, so you walk out of the station and straight into the Cathedral Christmas Market. No transfer, no airport queue, and you can be holding a mulled wine minutes after stepping off the train.

By air

Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) takes direct flights from a number of UK airports and sits south-east of the city. The S19 S-Bahn runs from the terminal to Cologne Hauptbahnhof in 15 to 20 minutes, and a single adult ticket costs €6.80, or €3.40 for children under 15. Düsseldorf Airport is a second option, with direct regional trains into Cologne.

Getting around once you are there

You will not need a car. Every market in this guide except the outer-district ones is within walking distance of the others — the cathedral, Neumarkt, Alter Markt and Heumarkt sit inside a compact ring, and the Harbour market is a walk south along the Rhine. City-centre parking is limited and expensive in December, so if you do drive, park outside the centre and take the U-Bahn in.

The market on Roncalliplatz is the one on every postcard, and it earns it. More than 150 stalls sell crafts, food and gifts underneath a giant Christmas tree, with the blackened Gothic front of Cologne Cathedral rising straight out of the back of the market. It is also the busiest by a wide margin, so go on a weekday if you can.

2. Markt der Engel on Neumarkt

The Markt der Engel — the Angels' Market — is the prettiest of the city-centre markets and the one to bring children to. Strings of lights are hung low across the whole square, and costumed angels wander between stalls that lean towards proper craft gifts rather than tat. It is a short walk west of the cathedral, at the far end of the main shopping streets.

Heinzels Wintermärchen — Heinzel's Winter Fairytale — spreads across Alter Markt and Heumarkt in the Old Town and is built around the Heinzelmännchen, the house gnomes of Cologne folklore who, the story goes, did the city's work overnight. Expect medieval-styled stalls, craftspeople working in the open and the big ice rink on Heumarkt.

The Hafen-Weihnachtsmarkt sits right on the Rhine beside the Chocolate Museum in the Rheinauhafen, and the maritime setting makes it the most distinctive market in the city — nautical-themed stalls, a Ferris wheel, medieval music and the river behind it all. It opens earliest of all the city's markets and stays open past Christmas, which makes it the useful one if your dates fall outside the standard season.

How to spend a weekend at the Cologne Christmas markets

Two nights is the sweet spot. One night is enough to see the cathedral market and little else; three starts to run out of Christmas market and turn into a city break, which Cologne is also perfectly good at. Here is how we would use a Friday-to-Sunday.

• Friday evening: arrive, drop your bags and walk straight to the Cathedral Christmas Market — it is at its best after dark, and Friday night is livelier than it is crowded. Finish in a brewery tap in the Old Town with a Kölsch, the city's own beer, served in the small 200ml glasses that keep arriving until you put your coaster on top.
• Saturday: start at Markt der Engel on Neumarkt before the crowds, then walk down to Heinzels Wintermärchen for the ice rink and the craft stalls. Break for lunch, then take the Rhine promenade south to the Harbour market and the Chocolate Museum. Save the evening for Heavenue on Friesenplatz, which has the best atmosphere after dark.
• Sunday: climb the cathedral tower if the queue is short, then pick a district market if any are open on your dates — Ehrenfeld is the easiest of them to reach from the centre — before your train or flight home.

The New Year market at the Chocolate Museum

The Harbour Christmas Market runs to 3 January 2027 in the 2026/27 season, making it one of only two Cologne markets open past Christmas alongside the Heumarkt half of Heinzels Wintermärchen. In the days between Christmas and New Year it is traditionally rebuilt as a New Year market, with similar stalls and the Ferris wheel left standing. Whether the organisers set out a separate New Year market period for 2026/27 is usually announced during the season.

The Christmas Express

The Weihnachtsexpress, run by Wolters Bimmelbahnen, is a road train that loops the Old Town and links the main markets to each other, with Christmas music and commentary on the way round. It is genuinely useful on a cold day with children in tow, and it departs every 15 minutes from four stops:

Höhner Weihnacht 2026

Höhner are a Cologne institution — a band best known for carnival songs in the local Kölsch dialect — and their Höhner Weihnacht concerts return in December 2026. It is about as local an evening as you can buy a ticket for, and a good way to see how the city celebrates rather than how it sells itself to visitors. Ice skating

Temporary rinks appear across the city in December. The big one is on Heumarkt as part of Heinzels Wintermärchen, but several districts put up smaller rinks, usually with music and lights, and those are far less crowded than the central rink at the weekend.

Christmas markets in Cologne's outer districts

These are the markets locals actually go to. Most open for only one or two weekends — usually the second and third weekends of Advent — and the organisers tend not to confirm dates until October or November.
